Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about the Scientific Research Projects (SRP).

I am a student and I have an idea for an SRP. How should I proceed?

You must use the latest template from our website (see "SRP proposal template" at the bottom of the page in https://kiktools.amsterdamumc.org/srp/). Fill it in together with your intended supervisor. When both you and your supervisor believe you have finalised this SRP proposal to the best of your abilities, send it to the SRP coordinators for approval. You may be requested to make changes, but once approved you will be asked to upload the SRP proposal on Canvas so we can formally approve your SRP project and assign you a KIK tutor.

What are the deadlines to submit my SRP proposal?

Students starting their SRP in May must submit and have their SRP proposal approved before May 1st. Students starting their SRP in November must submit and have their SRP proposal approved before November 1st. Submissions must be made on Canvas in the appropriate assignment ("SRP Proposal"). Please note that these deadlines are final and that we may ask you to make changes to your SRP proposal after you submit it. You should submit your SRP proposal early.

I am a researcher/company and I have an idea for an SRP. How can I propose an SRP for students?

You must use the latest template from our website (see "SRP proposal template" at the bottom of the page in https://kiktools.amsterdamumc.org/srp/). Fill it in and send it to the SRP coordinators for approval. You may be requested to make changes, but once approved the SRP proposal will be placed in our website and students will have access to it. Students who are interested in your proposal will contact you using the contact information you provide in the SRP proposal.

I am a student and I am using an SRP proposal already approved from the website. However, I am making small changes to this proposal. Do I need to add the "Proposal number"?

If you are using a pre-approved SRP proposal from our website, always include the "SRP proposal number" from the website in your uploaded proposal. You must do that even if you are making changes to that proposal. If you are making changes, please highlight all differences in terms of added / changed content in the new proposal you submit relative to the original proposal in our website. You can do that by highlighting in red or yellow (for example) any changes you make in the content of the SRP proposal in our website.

What information should I include in my SRP proposal about the availability of the data I use in my SRP project?

We SRP coordinators want to know about the situation of the data for each SRP project, in other words, how exactly is the data available for the student. Data issues are the first most common issue that leads to delays in the SRP and problems in the SRP project. If the data you use is publicly available, please state so. If however you will use any data that is not publicly available, please explain the following below. The concrete points that should be described in an SRP proposal includes: 1) Do you already have all the formal authorization to use the data in this research project? This means that you have DPO approval and approval from medical ethics board, for instance; and 2) Is the data was already extracted -- for example for the electronic health records system of the hospital -- and can the student can already access it, for instance using a PC in the hospital where data is stored securely, or using a secure cloud-based service (like myDRE)? If the data is not yet extracted, you should provide details about what are the steps needed to extract it, how long it will take, and who is responsible for those steps. Is there a member of the supervisory team or company who will handling this? What is the date by which the data will become available for the student? Is the student expected to do something themselves to get the data?

What are the deadlines to submit my SRP work plan?

Students starting their SRP in May must submit and have their SRP work plan approved before July 1st. Students starting their SRP in November must submit and have their SRP work plan approved before February 1st. Submissions must be made on Canvas in the appropriate assignment ("SRP Work plan"). Please note that these deadlines are final and that we may ask you to make changes to your SRP work plan after you submit it the first time. You should account for that and submit your SRP work plan early.

What are the deadlines to submit my SRP midterm evaluation?

There are no hard deadlines to submit your SRP midterm evaluation, since the midterm evaluation is optional (even though it is also highly recommended).

What are the tracks available for SRP students?

The two tracks available for students are the "AI for Health" and the "eHealth" tracks.

Can students following a track (like the eHealth track or the AI track) do their SRP on a topic outside their track?

If the student wants a diploma supplement stating that they have completed the elective track (for example, AI or eHealth) then yes you need to do the SRP in a topic that is related to that track. If you wish to do your thesis on a topic not in the track you are following, you must also notify education administration by email informing them that that is the case (and that you will do not wish the diploma supplement mentioning you have completed the elective track).

What is the SRP website?

The SRP website is this website you are currently in: https://kiktools.amsterdamumc.org/srp
